Frequently asked questions

What you need to know

What is Proposition 65?
California's Proposition 65, also known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, requires businesses to notify Californians if their products contain certain chemicals identified by the state as potentially causing cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm. The state maintains a list of over 900 chemicals that trigger this requirement.
Why does this warning appear on our products?
Some of our products include this warning to comply with California law. Many of the substances on the Prop 65 list are naturally found in the environment — in soil, water, air, and in commonly consumed foods like vegetables, seafood, dairy, and wine. In many cases, trace amounts result from natural sources or the cooking process, not deliberate addition.
Does this law apply everywhere?
No. Proposition 65 is a California-specific regulation and does not apply in other U.S. states or under federal law. However, to ensure full compliance for products that may be sold or shipped into California, we include the warning even if the product is also sold in other regions.
How does Prop 65 differ from federal standards?
Proposition 65 is not a safety law in the traditional sense — it is a consumer information law. The thresholds that trigger a warning are often much lower than those set by federal or international food safety agencies. For instance, California's warning level for lead is 0.5 micrograms per day — significantly stricter than federal guidance. As a result, you may see a Prop 65 warning on a product in California that you wouldn't see on the same item elsewhere, even though the product itself hasn't changed.
Why don't all products carry this label?
Some products may not carry the label because they aren't sold in California, or the manufacturer has assessed that no warning is required. Just because a product lacks the Prop 65 warning doesn't mean it's free of all listed chemicals — it may simply mean it isn't sold in California or the manufacturer chose not to label it.
Is this product safe?
Yes. All our products meet or exceed applicable federal food safety requirements. A Proposition 65 warning is not a statement about product safety — it's a disclosure required under California law when specific conditions are met. We support transparency and want customers to make informed decisions. To learn more, visit www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/food.
